March Madness

This month for master class, we obviously did a March Madness bracket...piano style.  :)  After performing our festival (or other current) pieces for each other, the madness began.  We had a single elimination tournament using one of our favorite iPad games, Dustbuster.

You can see the iPad screen projected on to the wall.

Anneka & Tasha were the first to face off.

Can you see our March Madness Bracket?

Our little mascot helped us keep the beat.

Emilee & Taylor faced off next.

Jarsden & J'Lynn compete.

Emilee & Anneka compete for the championship.

Anneka takes it!

The Magic Carpet

I have been searching for a long time for a floor rug with the grand staff on it.  Almost everything I found was made out of vinyl, fabric, or some other form of plastic, and I knew we would be out a rug before you could say, "pianos, penguins, & popsicles."  So...off I went into the world of Google and Pinterest to find a more lasting solution to my quest.  I stumbled upon this post over at pianimation.com and decided to take matters into my own hands.  I basically followed her instructions to make the rug.  I bought this rug from Walmart and painted on the staff lines using painter's tape and black paint.  I sewed up some bean bags one afternoon and...presto!  A magic carpet for our studio...almost as cool as Aladin's.
Today in lessons, David pulled out the magic carpet and had some fun.  Our students had a great time learning intervals and competing to identify them quickly, on the rug and on the keyboard.  We are excited to put it to good use!

Christmas Recital

Thank you to all who attended our studio Christmas recital this past Saturday. We were happy to be able to hear each of our students perform some of the most well-loved pieces of all time, and to serve the residents at the Homestead Retirement Center, where the recital was held. Great job to all of our performers!

Master Class

We have been very pleased with the progress of each of our students this past month. We have seen an increased dedication to practice and higher appreciation for music. On Saturday, January 28th, we had our first master class of the year. Though there is nothing more tempting than sleeping in on a cold Rexburg Saturday morning, most of our students made it! The younger group met first at 10:00am and came with lots of energy and excitement. We played theory games such as "I'm a Note!" and even played the master class version of Musical Chairs. As each student played their piece of music, others quietly listened and when one student struggled through a couple of measures, another stood by her side to help her through. The advanced group met at 11:00am and were even more excited about the chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies. But, despite meeting at the later time, it seemed much like 6:30am. Since the advanced group had spent more time working on their music, we were able to spend  more time giving positive and constructive feedback on their performances. Which, not only came from us, but also their peers. Though we ran out of time and weren't able to learn how to compose a song using a phone number, we look forward to it at our next master class.

Piano Party

We had our first piano party yesterday and it was a success!  It was a little on the crazy side trying to squeeze 15 people into our little apartment, but I think it was worth it.  We played a name game to get to know each other called piano pals.  The objective was to meet everyone.  We wanted the kids to feel like they are coming to play for their friends at master class and not just strangers.
Everyone went around the room, meeting all the other students.  They had to record the name of each person along with an interesting fact about them.  When we were done filling in our boxes, we sat down and as each person officially introduced him/herself, we crossed off the names until someone got 4 in a row.

After getting to know each other a little, the big kids paired up with the little kids and played note bingo.  Meanwhile, David and I pour the batter on the grill and flipped out the most amazing cinnamon swirl pancakes ever!  They are so delicious.
Hopefully the kids had fun and will feel like they really made some pals for piano master classes in the future.
